I. The Right to LifeIt is a fundamental principle of most moral theories that all human beings have a right to life. The existence of a right implies obligations or duties of third parties towards the right-holder. One has a right AGAINST other people. The fact that one possesses a certain right - prescribes to others certain obligatory behaviours and proscribes certain acts or omissions. This Janus-like nature of rights and duties as two sides of the same ethical coin - creates great confusion. People often and easily confuse rights and their attendant duties or obligations with the morally decent, or even with the morally permissible. What one MUST do as a result of another's right - should never be confused with one SHOULD or OUGHT to do morally (in the absence of a right). The right to life has eight distinct strains:IA. The right to be brought to lifeIB. The right to be bornIC. The right to have one's life maintainedID. The right not to be killedIE. The right to have one's life savedIF. The right to save one's life (erroneously limited to the right to self-defence)IG. The Right to terminate one's lifeIH. The right to have one's life terminatedIA. The Right to be Brought to LifeOnly living people have rights. There is a debate whether an egg is a living person - but there can be no doubt that it exists. Its rights - whatever they are - derive from the fact that it exists and that it has the potential to develop life. The right to be brought to life (the right to become or to be) pertains to a yet non-alive entity and, therefore, is null and void. Had this right existed, it would have implied an obligation or duty to give life to the unborn and the not yet conceived. No such duty or obligation exist.IB. The Right to be BornThe right to be born crystallizes at the moment of voluntary and intentional fertilization. If a woman knowingly engages in sexual intercourse for the explicit and express purpose of having a child - then the resulting fertilized egg has a right to mature and be born. Furthermore, the born child has all the rights a child has against his parents: food, shelter, emotional nourishment, education, and so on.It is debatable whether such rights of the fetus and, later, of the child, exist if the fertilization was either involuntary (rape) or unintentional ("accidental" pregnancies). It would seem that the fetus has a right to be kept alive outside the mother's womb, if possible. But it is not clear whether it has a right to go on using the mother's body, or resources, or to burden her in any way in order to sustain its own life (see IC below).IC. The Right to have One's Life MaintainedDoes one have the right to maintain one's life and prolong them at other people's expense? Does one have the right to use other people's bodies, their property, their time, their resources and to deprive them of pleasure, comfort, material possessions, income, or any other thing? The answer is yes and no.No one has a right to sustain his or her life, maintain, or prolong them at another INDIVIDUAL's expense (no matter how minimal and insignificant the sacrifice required is). Still, if a contract has been signed - implicitly or explicitly - between the parties, then such a right may crystallize in the contract and create corresponding duties and obligations, moral, as well as legal.Example:No fetus has a right to sustain its life, maintain, or prolong them at his mother's expense (no matter how minimal and insignificant the sacrifice required of her is). Still, if she signed a contract with the fetus - by knowingly and willingly and intentionally conceiving it - such a right has crystallized and has created corresponding duties and obligations of the mother towards her fetus. On the other hand, everyone has a right to sustain his or her life, maintain, or prolong them at SOCIETY's expense (no matter how major and significant the resources required are). Still, if a contract has been signed - implicitly or explicitly - between the parties, then the abrogation of such a right may crystallize in the contract and create corresponding duties and obligations, moral, as well as legal.Example:Everyone has a right to sustain his or her life, maintain, or prolong them at society's expense. Public hospitals, state pension schemes, and police forces may be required to fulfill society's obligations - but fulfill them it must, no matter how major and significant the resources are. Still, if a person volunteered to join the army and a contract has been signed between the parties, then this right has been thus abrogated and the individual assumed certain duties and obligations, including the duty or obligation to give up his or her life to society.ID. The Right not to be KilledEvery person has the right not to be killed unjustly. What constitutes "just killing" is a matter for an ethical calculus in the framework of a social contract. But does A's right not to be killed include the right against third parties that they refrain from enforcing the rights of other people against A? Does A's right not to be killed preclude the righting of wrongs committed by A against others - even if the righting of such wrongs means the killing of A?Not so. There is a moral obligation to right wrongs (to restore the rights of other people). If A maintains or prolongs his life ONLY by violating the rights of others and these other people object to it - then A must be killed if that is the only way to right the wrong and re-assert their rights.(continued).

All kinds of stuff was piling up?on my desk, in the kitchen?in fact, in every room in the house. Then I discovered the power of . . . the timer! Now my motto is: Set it and forget it! (Where have I heard that before?)It really seemed too simple a solution to solve what had become an overwhelming problem: how to fit all the work I have to do, need to do, must do, and wish to do into one twenty-four hour period and still have any time left to do anything halfway resembling "fun." (What's that, anyway?)But the fact of the matter is that it IS just that SIMPLE! First, I get all of the routine out of the way: shower, exercise, grooming, prayer or meditation, breakfast, etc. Finally at the computer, I set the timer?usually for half an hour. When it "dings" I get up and maybe transfer some laundry to the dryer. (I'm one of those rare and lucky women who is married to an exceptional man who usually at least starts the laundry, and on a daily basis, so we never have laundry piled up.)Just a little "mini" break from the computer, but it does several things: (1) It allows me to tend to the little mundane tasks that otherwise get put off. (2) It truly is the "pause that refreshes," as doing so prevents me from developing carpal tunnel or that horrible pain between the shoulders that so many women suffer from. (3) It gets the blood circulating in my legs and prevents the varicose veins or phlebitis that sometimes develop in those who sit a lot. (4) It helps rev up my metabolism, just moving around a bit.Another benefit of the mini-break is that it seems to help clear my thinking and keeps me from getting bogged down or developing writer's block. And it helps me to stay focussed (believe it or not), as my mind isn't as prone to wander as when I'm "at it" for hours on end. And I don't get "burnt out" on any one thing this way.I set the timer for various chunks of time throughout the day?that's the beauty of it?it is SO flexible, and it gives you that awesome feeling of being in control at all times. If you plan your work, you can work your plan a whole lot easier using a timer. You actually have a roadmap then for the whole day, and the little "dings" are the mile markers. You get a real feeling of accomplishment, because you ARE, in fact, actually accomplishing things.Try it?you'll love it!.

In last week's article (http://www.whatittakes.com/Archive/Newsletter30to39/newsletter__36.shtml), I asserted that defining and living your life mission can in fact make it easier to attract your ideal relationship. That's because simply living your life mission automatically attracts your ideal partner.Sounds simple, right? Well it is and it isn't. It's simple because people who are compatible with you will be drawn to you. But living your life mission is not always effortless.I believe to live your life mission you need to consistently take three specific steps. These are:1. Trust and believe in yourself above all else.Trust that what you have deemed as your life mission is exactly that. Trust this even when others tell you it's not so. Trust when people who are incompatible start to move away. Hold onto your life mission during difficult times and decisions. Use it as a guiding light when you are lost. Believe in yourself.2. Reorient your life around your life mission.Does your job reflect your life mission? Does your community? Your hobbies? Your conduct? If not, start making small, incremental changes oriented around your life mission. Small changes are easier to integrate over time and will make the most difference.3. Use your life mission to discern correct choices in all circumstances. When choices come up about your career, lifestyle, relationships and conduct, measure them against your life mission rather than against what you want in the moment, or what you feel obligated to do. Always ask yourself, "Will this choice support what I am up to in my life?" If the answer is no, make another choice. If the answer is yes, go for it!Living a life truly oriented around your life mission will give you a fulfilling life, one that you love. And, when you live such a life, you become very attractive to your ideal partner!Your Relationship Coach,http://www.WhatItTakes.com(c) , 1998-2002. Do you know how to attract your ideal mate?
Surviving As A Single Parent: Seven Suggestions To Make Your Life Easier

*Please send me a copy of the ezine edition or the URL of thewebsite where you publish my article.*You may use this article if you include the ENTIRE resource boxthat follows the article.1 - Forgive even if you will never be able to Forget.Let go of grudges you may hold against your child's other parent, who is absent from BOTH of your lives. Holding onto feelings of anger will not change your situation and will probably consume a great deal of your energy - energy you need to devote to creatinga positive environment for your child. If you dwell on your disappointment with and/or dislike of the father or mother of your child - chances are your child will sense your feelings andsuffer in some way from your negative attitude.2 - Make the most of everything you have.Even if you do not have a lot of money, you do have your child and your love and your time to give to him or her. Try to remember that monetary wealth and material possessions are notthe most important items in your child's life. Your love, support and time together mean much more to them. You can have fun for free. Activities like - going for a walk or a bike ride, playing at the park, coloring, painting, singing, or dancing - will thrill your child just as much as spending money to go to anamusement park, an arcade or a toy store.3 - Be the best parent you can possibly be.Give as much as you can without setting goals that are unrealistic for one parent to achieve. Don't beat yourself up for what cannot be. Do recognize what you can do to create a good life for your child to the best of your abilities.4 - Develop a network of reliable resources.Families are not biological. Surround yourself and your childwith friends you know and trust - people who care about both of you. "Aunts" and "Uncles" and even "Grandparents," who are notblood-related can be just as beneficial to your child as actual biological family members. The "family" you create for your childcan provide him or her with the same kind of love and support as a traditional family. They can also help you with your responsibilities as a single parent. Let them play an active role in your child's life. Learn to turn to your "family" when you need a break. Nobody should have to go it alone and you will probably be able to be a better parent by relying on your"family" of close friends to support you and your child.5 - Take responsibility for your life today.Remember whatever lead you to where you are today, you are responsible for another life - the innocent life of a child, who did not ask to be born. Your child is not responsible for theexperiences or events that made you become a single parent. Your child is completely dependent upon you through no choice of their own. Don't let them down or hold them accountable for your actions (or the actions of their absent parent). They are powerless and vulnerable to the possibly less-than-idealconsequences they face as the child of a single parent. Your role and influence in their life is paramount to their chances of becoming a happy, productive, successful adult. They need you more than their words will ever tell.6 - Set up daily rituals and regular routines.Your child needs stability and security. One way to provide thisis by developing a daily routine. Simple things like - going to the park every Sunday afternoon, eating dinner together each night, sharing a treat before nap time or reading a book together before bed every night, will become activities that your childlooks forward to and can count on to occur with regularity.7 - Be consistent and dependable.Create realistic rules and a standard of discipline that you stick to all the time. If you're consistent with your child, he or she will learn what is acceptable behavior and what is not. They will also learn what you expect from them and what they can expect from you. If you're dependable, they will know that they can always count on you to help them with their homework, bethere for dinner or tuck them in bed at night. They have to be able to depend on you. You're the most important person in their life. Try to remember that no matter how tired you are at the end of the day or how frustrated you may become when they're fussy - They need you to be there for them. You should cherish every moment with your child - they are the best blessings on earth.Resource Box - ?

1.High IQ, Low EQ: A student. There's a story going around the Chicago area about a student at the U. of Chicago last year. At that venerable high-IQ institution, it's still a graduation requirement that each student pass a swimming test. A student showed up to take the test and, 3 hours later, after they'd dragged him out of Lake Michigan and the EMS had left, they asked him why he'd shown up to take the test when he didn't know how to swim."I read about it," he said.2.High IQ, Low EQ: Frank.Ph.D. in Engineering, designs military defense systems for the government, has a net worth in the millions, and top security clearance, and is on his 5th wife.3.Average IQ, High EQ: Dr. BobBob has an IQ of 125, low for a physician. He was told repeatedly he wasn't med-school material, but his social skills, focus, and determination made his becoming a doctor a reality. And what a gift to the profession! He has a marvelous "bedside manner." He's grateful he can practice medicine ? when was the last time you encountered a physician with that attitude??4.High IQ, High EQ: William Pickering, the Rocket Man.Ph.D., Physics, CalTech. In 1957, when Russia launched Sputnik, Pickering was working for the Jet Propulsion Lab. In 2 months, the Naval Research Laboratory launched the Vanguard, which under the glare of international media, blew up on the launch pad. Fortunately, Pickering had been working since Sputnik on their own satellite. ExplorerI was launched less than 4 months after Sputnik. To bring this off, Pickering worked James van Allen, and Wernher von Braun. (What's that sound I hear? Egos colliding???) Imagine the pressure and EQ it took to pull this off with the government, the military and the American public breathing down their necks. Which of these towering, credentialed geniuses got the leadership job? (And correct me if I'm wrong, but Einstein was also alive at the time.) The one with the EQ!5.High IQ, Low EQ: John, a lawyer. His girl friend, my client, became increasingly displeased with his "cluelessness" and lack of demonstrative affection. Finally she lost her temper and yelled, "Can't you just send me some flowers?""You don't understand," he replied. "I don't know how to."6.Low IQ, Low EQ: Mike Tyson.7.High IQ, Low EQ: Harry, a lawyer.A lawyer I worked with. Told his secretary, a single parent with 4 children under the age of 6 and no child support, who earned $28,000 a year, when her second-hand car broke down, "Well, if you'd just buy a new Lexus like I have ?"Were his office projects sabotaged? What do you think?8.High IQ, High EQ: Ray Garrett, Jr., former chairman of the SEC.The man under whom it all shook down after Watergate in the 70s. The stock market was at its all-time low. He was interviewed live on "Wall Street Week," the night before he deregulated stock commissions. Rukheyser, hoping to ^nail him^, said, "And what will you do if this doesn't work?"Unflappable, Garrett shrugged and replied, "Try something else."9. High IQ, High EQ: Captain of the RCI's Rhapsody of the SeasMany seniors travel on cruises and when their poor eyesight and bad hips collide with a rocking ship, spilled beverages, and tendering, the results are predictable despite all caution. Last cruise I spoke on, I watched the captain come down from the bridge to visit with a couple sitting poolside. He asked the man how he was doing after his fall in the dining room, looked at his bruises, ordered drinks delivered, sat and visited. I know your insurance company would tell you not to do this. I worked in a law firm at one time and I heard it repeatedly, "If he had just apologized ? If she'd even said she was sorry." I rear-ended someone 2 years ago. Just flat out didn't hit the brakes in time. The woman told me she had just recovered from a back injury and was scared. SHE was scared? I was PETRIFIED. I asked her to follow me to a parking lot. I spent 30 minutes with her expressing my concern, calming her, offering to drive her home, make phone calls, and saying how sorry I was to have added to her stress. Believe it or not, I never heard from her again.10. Low IQ, High EQ: Jen, sales.Jen never finished college. Her strengths on the StrengthsFinder? are Positivity, WOO (Winning Others Over), Empathy, Communicator, Activator. This is not the profile of an intellectual. She makes 6 figures. 11.Unk. IQ, High EQ: Michael JacksonA tricky one, but, EQ involves creativity, flexibility, and intuition (rather than purely cognitive rules and formulas) and few have produced more hit singles than he. Consider his responses to an interview:S: "How do you write your songs?" Michael: "If I sit there and say I'm going to write a best-seller, nothing is going to happen?. The way I wrote Billy Jean?I was in the car and I thought I'd like to make a song with a really cool base line, and I let it go. I just let go. A few days later, the beats just started playing in my head?.The mistake many musicians make is that they get in the way of the music. Get out of the way. Let the song write itself." S: "But if you don't write it, where does it come from?"Michael just shrugged, paused, and said, "Above." 12. Unk. IQ, High EQ: Pearl Bailey"There are two kinds of talents, man-made talent and God-given talent. With man-made talent you have to work very hard. With God-given talent, all you have to do is touch it up once in a while." Emotional intelligence is where emotions and thinking interface. Winners have high EQs and it can be learned.
Writing is a solitary task. Writing needs concentration and quiet. Writing requires absolute commitment. Are all there scary statements true? What is more, is it possible to balance your writing career and family without turning yourself into a zombie?Everything is feasible; I am the living example of it.There is only one secret: TIME PLAN.This is step one for the aspiring writer's success. Without it, nothing can be achieved. How can you do it?Simply make a rough plan of the time allowed to your writing project every day. It is highly important for the writer to know exactly WHEN he /she is going to settle down and write, feeling free of all the other responsibilities that he has.I have made a simple schedule. You can work out yours according to your family needs.Every morning just after breakfast, and as soon as the family have gone, I allow myself to work on my PC for one to two hours, depending on the workload of the day. Then I go on with the house chores and all the rest of the family tasks till noon. At 2 o' clock everybody is back so I serve lunch, but after that I have 2-3 hours free to work on my morning assignment. Thus, there is plenty of time to care for the family , while in the afternoons I still have time to go to my part time job in time , feeling satisfied I have worked at home on my project. In the evening I sometimes find an hour or so , when the family watch TV . This time I sit with them in the living room , having pre arranged to do the easiest tasks for my writing job, such as note taking or layout planning of new stories or articles. I use pen to paper and I don't bother if I make mistakes. Next morning, there is plenty of time to revise them and complete them.If this plan has been working perfectly for me, why not for you as well? You only have to calculate when and how long you need to write every day. Of course , you must stick to your plan and never give it up , apart from very urgent cases. Remember that your work is also urgent, so never skip it.If you respect your writing job, the others will do so too. What is more, they won't feel neglected as you will give them your care and attention at the time they are around. Furthermore, your house chores will be done in time and you won't feel overworked. Many a times I used to end up with half burned meals and I felt extremely stressed trying to catch up with all the house chores before the family was back home. So, telling yourself ?I'll do it later', it's not the solution. ?Later' will come in no time and you will find yourself in a very difficult situation. Yet, no one will believe your excuses as you have been in the house the whole morning , and you will feel inefficient for no reason at all! " A little every day" is my motto, and, in the long run, everything is done and everybody is happy. Keeping your writing and family under control will make you feel satisfied and everyone, including you, will be happy. Also, keep in mind that there is nothing odd if you work in unconventional places.I sometimes find it stimulating to work in the living room with all the family around. Noise does not bother me ,on the contrary, it brings me more ideas. This article was outlined last evening while we were all watching a football match. Well, the truth is I did not watch much of it! I was absorbed in my new article, but that's how this idea sprang out. I can perfectly work in a chatty setting. Have you tried it? You may come up with fresh ideas and great articles. Finally, who says that writing can turn you into a zombie? Shatter the myth! It's up to you to enjoy both your family and your writing career. Simply make a time plan!Ends.

"Whether you boat on fresh water or on the ocean, there is a lot of marine life to observe and appreciate. We boat in the Pacific Northwest off the west coast around the islands and straits of the Pacific Ocean. The sea life here is exceptional. Following are some of our wonderful experiences."One of the most powerful sights is that of large pods of Orca whales, or Killer whales as they are often referred to, as they migrate off the coast. Sometimes there can be several in these pods including mother whales and their babies. Orca whales are quite beautiful to see. Their black and white bodies glisten in the sunlight each time they appear near the water surface or do a breach jump. Usually the babies follow their mothers. It is quite possible to watch them for hours without getting tired.Boaters must be careful and remain a respectable distance from the whales, as most whales are endangered. You do not want to interfere with their normal migration routes and movements. It is possible to see Orca whales up close in captivity, and they are splendid animals. But when you can actually see them in their normal environment in the ocean, it is magnificent. How fortunate we are to be able to go boating for a few days and have them entertain us along the way.Another sea mammal that I always enjoy watching is the dolphin or the porpoise. They too can be found off the west coast. These mammals are so sleek and they can swim at very fast speeds. As they jump and slice through the surface of the water they are quite entertaining. Most people have seen dolphins in action at the various aquariums around the world. Well they do the same in the wild. They make me laugh. I think that they actually enjoy an audience!Living in the Pacific North West, we are very aware of the salmon industry. When boating, there are many small fishing boats out with their nets during the fisheries openings for the various kinds of salmon. It is fun to watch them jump. Seals are also very good fishermen. You can be sure that when the salmon are plentiful around the mouths of the large rivers, you will see a lot of seals. They love to fish for salmon, much to the chagrin of the commercial fishermen. They can be seen swimming through the waters, or sunning themselves on large logs or rocky outcroppings along the shoreline. The bark of a seal is loud and comical to hear and they are another creature that can entertain west coast boaters. When the salmon are running, you will find another fisherman, one with wings. There are many Bald Eagles on the west coast and they also enjoy a good salmon dinner. These are very majestic birds. Their soaring overhead is something to be marveled at. The black and white features really stand out against the sky as they glide and then swoop down for a fish.Sea otters can sometimes be seen around large beds of kelp. In particular I have seen many when boating in our Bayliner, off the coastline from British Columbia to California. These sea creatures are very timid, so you must give them space. They love to float on their backs and eat sea urchins or play in the water, rolling over and over. Often you can see them playing in pairs. Sea otters are my husband's favorite sea mammals. He loves to watch them play. They really are very cute. If you have watched them, I'm sure you will agree. As well as these mammals, the coast offers wonderful creatures that attached themselves to the rocks and driftwood or coral. Sea anemones are absolutely beautiful, as are the many colored starfish. Anenomes are found in white, pale green and soft pinks with large fluffy plumes. Starfish are found in ranges of bright orange to deep purple. They can be very tiny and fragile or very large. Some measure several inches across. Sea cucumbers, barnacles, sand dollars, oysters, mussels and crabs are all found along the coastline. I love to walk on docks at marinas when the tide is out and see some of these shell fish in tiny pools of water. You can often get up quite close to see them better. All in all we are very fortunate in this area to be able to see so many creatures. Many of which are not seen by most people around the world. They enhance our environment and our boating experiences. It is important that we remember to respect all of these creatures in their natural environments, so as not to interfere with nature's course..
